Joy contacted me about taking photographs of her for a swimsuit model calendar competition. The day of the shoot it was so cold and I offered to reschedule, but Joy was ready to go. I thought it would be impossible to be natural in a bikini in this weather – there were still patches of snow! But Joy proved me wrong! She was such a pro and made a freezing afternoon at the beach sizzle!

Just like every mom I love to take photographs of my babies.

I have a lot of people ask me for advice about how to take better photos of their children using their own cameras. Here are a few tips that I like to share –

1. Turn off the flash and use a room in your home with a lot of natural light. Or even better go outside, but keep in mind that lighting is best in the early morning or late afternoon.

2. Think about the backgrounds. Keep it simple with solid colors or natural settings.

3. If you have an SLR, but not sure how to use it. Try selecting the portrait setting which is still automatic, but will choose the best shutter speed and aperture for this type of photography.

4. Have fun. Your baby will react to laughing and silly faces with smiles and excitement in their eyes.
